Horse riding in Tanzania.

Horse riding safari at Ndarakwai Ranch
Started in 1994, Ndarakwai ranch is a unique success story of land and wildlife rehabilitation, the first of its kind in Tanzania. With about 70 mammal species and over 350 bird species in a combination of high long grass plains, classic Acacia savannah, Commiphora thickets, and riparian habitats, a stay at Ndarakwai ranch is a great addition to any safari itinerary.

With 14 large comfortable and individually decorated tents, is set at 4200 feet in the midst of an 11,000 acre privately-owned ranch in Siha District, West Kilimanjaro. Ndarakwai ranch offers a high degree of personalized service, attention to detail, great food, as well as a wide variety of excellent wildlife related activities, cultural experiences, and excursions.

ACTIVITIES
Ndarakwai ranch is perfect place for those who want to be more active on safari. They can let the car behind and hike, visit local communities, ride horses across the bush, and even go jogging, all in an area where there is plenty of wildlife and stunning scenery.

Horse Riding Safaris / Fly Camping
We can organize horse riding trips of several days (1 – 9 nights) from Ndarakwai ranch, towards the Great Rift Valley of northern Tanzania. A light camp is built by our staff and moved daily. This is a true bush experience that gets you even closer to the land, people, and wildlife.

Walks
We offer half day guided walks form the camp. Sometimes a short morning or afternoon walk just doesn’t do it and we can take your guests on an all day walk – with a catered picnic lunch. Our walks are not an endurance test – we go at your guests pace – and we can call a vehicle in at any time for the return trip to camp.

Equestrian Courses
We organize long stays for experience riders willing to improve their riding skills on cross country, jumping and dressage disciplines, training on thoroughbred horses well schooled, professional equipment and miles and miles of an unspooled habitat where to ride freely.

Workshops / Retreats
Ndarakwai ranch is an ideal location for workshops, retreats, or short courses related to environmental science. We have a fully functional seminar room with digital projector, DVD player, and wireless internet.

Filming/Photo Shoots
Ndarakwai ranch is an ideal location for all sorts of filming and photography projects – even those that might require longer term filming, set construction, getting close to wildlife on foot, Maasai communities, etc.

Cater for the handicapped
Horse riding safaris for the handicapped, ensuring their safety and proper balance on the horses and potentially helping them to improve their motor skills. Top horses have good characteristics, they are not only healthy, strong and beautiful but their ability to work with all types of people makes them perfect partners.

Children activities
Children can spend a good time with horse, getting fully involved in their care, learning about the maintenance of the stables and the horse-tack, riding, grooming, bedding, feeding, watering, and learning about breeding foals. Apart from horse riding we also offer great entertainments to children in our gardens, contact with different animal species and a great environment to discover. It can be a great opportunity to get to learn about other cultures, new habitats and the important of developing on a healthy environment.

How to best include Ndarakwai in your Safari Itinerary
Ndarakwai is 65 km north of Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) so it’s a great place to either start or end a safari. On arrival at KIA you can drive your guests straight to Camp (approx. 1 hour 15 min.) bringing them directly into the bush without the need for an overnight stop in the Arusha area. We can do the transfers for you and have special low rates for “first night in from KIA”. On their very first morning in Tanzania your guests can take it easy or head straight out for a walk to see wildlife. Ndarakwai is a good 3 night stay for most guests – longer if they are especially interested in walking, birds, horse riding, or generally wanting to go beyond the average safari experience. With an airstrip just a few kilometers from Camp (“Ngare Nairobi” also called “West Kili” Airstrip) your guests can charter (or use the Regional scheduled flight) to any other destination in Tanzania.
At the end of a safari guests can be enjoying any number of activities on their very last day. They can shower and have an early dinner before leaving for the airport to check in. Again, Ndarakwai Camp can do the transfer for you – freeing up your car and driver early.

Getting to Ndarakwai Camp
Ndarakwai is in Siha District in Kilimanjaro Region, between Ngare Nairobi and Tingatinga. The area is generally known as “West Kili”. We are 100 km from Arusha (one and a half – two hours), and about 90 km from Moshi.
Turn North at Hai (Boma ya Ngombe) on the Moshi-Arusha road, drive through Sanya Juu, following signs from a turning on your left before Ngare Nairobi.
We are about 120 km from Namanga (2 hours) and there is a rough track going east just south of Longido that takes you to Tingatinga. We can supply more detailed directions if needed.

Ndarakwai Horse ride expedition 8days/ 7nights
Discover the wildlife rich western slopes of Kilimanjaro as Hemingway might have. You will be thrilled by breathtaking views, exhilarating canters and close contact with wildlife such as elephant, zebra, wildebeest – to name but a few. For experienced riders, this is the African equestrian experience of a lifetime!

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve
Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Transfer to the Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve, our starting point for the safari. During the afternoon we will introduce you to the horses where you can choose one to match your size and skill. Then we embark on a ride so you can become familiar with your horse. During this ride we will explore the area along the Forest. O/N Galloping Exclusive Mobile Camps –F/B.

Day 2: Explore the Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve
After a hearty breakfast we begin our horseback safari by riding into the Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve – a lush world of exotic scenery. We ride carefully to spot the shy Black and white Colobus monkeys. The forest is not accessible by vehicle so we use elephant trails to pass through. Bushbuck dash for cover as we pass, a sharp eye may catch sight of an elusive leopard, and a keen ear might pick up the crunching sound of a herd of elephant feeding not far off. After a picnic lunch in the forest we return to Camp for a hot shower, a sun downer drink and a hearty meal. O/N Galloping Exclusive Mobile Camps –F/B.

Day 3: Kilimanjaro Wilderness
Today we leave Camp and ride to the northwest. Our journey leads us through a mixture of open grassland and thorn bush savannah. Along the way we encounter our first plains animals. We arrive at the Riverside fly camp for a late lunch. Afterwards time for some rest or for a hike to the nearby water hole for some wildlife viewing. After early dinner we start for a night-game drive. Here you can view, with the aid of a spotlight, all the nocturnal species not generally seen during the day. O/N Galloping Exclusive Mobile Camps –F/B.

Day 4: River Camp
Today we ride out to search for big game. We arrive in the heart of the Game Reserve for another exciting day of wildlife viewing. In addition to the ever-present antelopes, zebras and gazelles, we’ll keep an eye out for giraffes, ostriches, warthogs and maybe even a leopard. What we really hope for though, is the chance for a peaceful encounter with a herd of magnificent African elephants. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera! O/N Galloping Exclusive Mobile Camps –F/B.

Day 5: Acacia camp
Wake up early with a cup of steaming tea or coffee served in your tent. We start for a long morning ride for spotting game along the western boundary of the ranch and return for a brunch. You are in the heart of the West-Kilimanjaro wilderness and we may find seasonally large herds of Elands, sometimes up to 100 and up to 200 elephants. Expect to spot lesser kudu, waterbuck, bush pig and warthog, with some luck even predators as striped and spotted hyena, cheetah and leopard. This area is not inhibited by lion which makes it safe to wander around camp at daytime. Late afternoon we reach Acacia Camp, our private fly camp set in the shade of an ancient African tree, with stunning views of Mt.Meru. Relax with a cool drink and take in the rich colours of the African sunset. Later, enjoy a bush dinner served under the stars. O/N Galloping Exclusive Mobile Camps –F/B.

Day 6: Game rides
Rise to an African sunrise for an early breakfast. We mount our horses and head out into the savannah. Kori bustards and secretary birds are often seen here stalking their prey. Our ride today starts crossing perfect terrain for long canters through bush and grasslands. Slowly and carefully we approach the wildlife we find along the way – lesser kudus, antelopes, gazelles and a lot of other animals. If you feel up to it, you can canter with zebras and wildebeests. This is a safari the way it was meant to be! Late afternoon we start for our last sunset-ride into the savannah. Evening rides are especially good for photography because of the beautiful light, and with photos in mind, it will be a calm ride. Returning to camp there is time to refresh with a hot bush shower before dinner. Our camp chef will impress you with her culinary skills, despite the rustic setting. After dinner, retire to the campfire and marvel at the enormous night sky before falling asleep to the sounds of the African night. O/N Galloping Exclusive Mobile Camps –F/B.

Day 7: Makoa-Farm
Today we will leave the West Kilimanjaro wilderness. We explore the area of ‘Tembobridge’ and seek out herds of elephant in between the euphorbia forest. Later we continue our way southeast passing the plains between Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro. See herd animals watching the horses with interest, have a canter with zebra and eland, then we stop en route for a picnic lunch. Later afternoon we meet the truck which will transport riders and horses back to Makoa Farm. Enjoy the view of Mt.Kilimanjaro while sitting on the veranda with a sunset drink. O/N Galloping Exclusive Mobile Camps –F/B.

Day 8: Departure
After a relaxed breakfast there may remain some time to have look around our farm and visit our uncountable number of animals. This is a farm environment with many dogs, cats, geese, chickens, peacocks, and little further stables for horses, a donkey, some pigs and cattle. Horse Riding at Manyara Ranch Conservancy
Has a number of horses available for experienced riders that can be used to explore the 44000 acre exclusive use area and neighboring community areas together with the in-house guide.
At the moment, only half day rides are available which can be combined with other activities such as game walks, game drives or extensions to nearby Tarangire National Park.
The horses at Manyara are thoroughbreds and the saddles are South African Endurance saddles. The ground is generally good and the game encounters frequent, with good numbers of elephant, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala and other game right on the doorstep. There are several prides of lion on the ranch and these are also encountered from time to time so its important to be a competent rider as both elephant and lion should be kept at a distance.

Costs

To ride at Manyara ranch, a stay of at least 2 nights is required. A night at Manyara Ranch during 2012 costs $550 per person sharing per night, plus $40 entrance fee to the ranch and each half day ride costs $100. Use of vehicle is extra if required as are transfers to and from the ranch.
