About the project

This project is aimed at the development of Jambiani.  Volunteers can contribute in a number of different projects throughout town to help the local community. These include working in the educational system, assisting with environmental projects, and teaching at the tourism training center. A special focus is given to teaching English to the local community and improving the fluency of children of all ages and their teachers as well.

Volunteer work and contribution Volunteer Involvement in Local Schools

Participants will have the opportunity to volunteer at the primary and secondary schools in Jambiani. While the educational system in the community is ill-equipped, the students understand the importance of education and have a very strong desire to learn. Volunteers will assist the local students and teachers by:

  • Teaching English to children, teachers and local adults
  • Developing the children’s creative skills through crafts such as painting, drawing and coloring.
  • Playing developmental games with the children.
  • Organize and coordinate sport afternoons with the scholars.
  • Help maintain and even repair the facilities.

Local Tourism Training Institute Tourism is considered to be a valuable industry in Zanzibar. Volunteers will work in the tourism training center to help train locals in skills relevant to the tourism business. This will help them attain jobs so that they can support their families. Participants can help at the center by assisting in the following:

  • Teaching Keyboarding
  • Teaching English
  • Life-skills teaching
  • Training students in basic administrative tasks
  • Training students in basic computer skills e.g. CV writing
  • Assist and supervise students in cooking classes and food & beverage management
  • Assist and supervise students in practical classes (‘role-play’, handling money, etc)

Environmental Program

The community of Jambiani is very reliant on its natural resources available to them, especially the ocean (fish, crabs, seaweed etc) and local crops that are be grown in the area.  Volunteers will help in keeping the beach and village areas beautiful as well as helping to improve it by planting trees and working on other initiatives.

Accommodation & facilities

Volunteers stay in a fully furnished guest lodge.  The inviting accommodations are located off of the coast and one can see the beautiful white-sand beaches from the front door of the house. Each bedroom accommodates two or three volunteers and has a bathroom en suite.  A professional cook will be provided to prepare meals in the kitchen.  The house also has mosquito nets, fans, housekeeping, and laundry service on a regular basis.  Be advised, just as in most places in Zanzibar, this house does not have hot water for showering. You will be provided with three wholesome meals a day. Breakfast usually consists of bread, fruit, eggs, tea and coffee. Lunches may also be packed or may be provided localy at your placement.

Visitors of the region have many fun activities to keep them busy when they have time off.  Sports on the beach, snorkeling, diving, and cycling are popular among those who enjoy physically active outlets.  Another popular destination is the markets of Zanzibar Town (also called Stone Town).  Further still, there are a range of safari’s and parks in the area for participants to explore.
