Day 1 – Arusha
Whenever you arrive, you‘ll be personally met and transferred to a lovely hotel in Arusha. Those arriving especially early can book optional activities. Then, spend the afternoon with your Tanzania Wildlife expedition mountain guide preparing for the climb.
Day 2: FOREST
After picking up the requisite documentation at the park gate the safari continues to the Lemosho glades starting point. Less steep than the Machame route and less used today’s trek is through the forest that laces the foot of the mountain. This evening’s camp is pitched in the forest at around 2750m.
Day 3 – SHIRA 1
Today’s trek takes you slowly up the edge of the Shira volcano. As you gain altitude the vegetation thins and exotic species of high altitude plants appear. Camp is situated near the rim of the ancient volcano and provides a good opportunity to get the first direct views of Kilimanjaro peal. Camp is pitched at about 3500m.
DAY 4: SHIRA 2
Trek to Shira 2 camp across the Shira plateau the flat caldera of a volcano that was actually bigger and is much older than Kilimanjaro. Views can be very weather specific but on good days are breathtaking. Bilious clouds are often observed melting down from its rim on to the heath covered plateau. Kibo also shines with a silvery luminance as the glaciers reflect the strong sunlight. A times mist covers the plateau – views come and go quickly. You arrive in time for lunch and then have plenty time to relax and even go for a short acclimatization walk in the afternoon.
Day 5 – LAVA TOWER
Today you will walk for 3 – 5 hours, enjoying sightings of the typical Kilimanjaro mountain vegetation and reaching a high point of around 4600 meters at our Lava tower camp. The hiking takes us out of the health zone in to alpine desert where only the very toughest tussock grasses can survive. Freezing at night and blazing conditions in the day make this a hard place to exist. For those that are up to it we ascend the Lava Tower in the afternoon. Overnight lava tower (full board).
DAY 6 – KARANGA VALLEY
Today we hike from lava tower to Karanga valley. The trail initially sets of downhill into the Barranco valley before ascending the Barranco wall. In this region there are significant numbers of very nature Senecios (giant groundsels). Lunch is taken on trail before heading on to Karanga valley and up to camp. In the afternoon we have time to relax and for the very active there is a chance to head over to the Karanga valley to look at some spectacular glacial scenery. Karanga camp (full board).
DAY 7 – BARAFU
About 2 hours from Karanga you will come out on the Barafu path (part of the Mweka Train). It is a further 1 – 2 hours to Barafu Hut. The last stage to Barafu hut is quite steep, and as always we advise taking it as easy as possible. Once in camp we have lunch and then the afternoon head out on an afternoon acclimazation hike to around 4700 – 4800metres. Back at camp dinner is served. Views of Mawenzi peak are also superb here. Overnight Barafu camp (full board).
DAY 8 – CRATER
Today we ascend to the roof of Africa! After an early start we ascend up to the rim of the Kibo crater. Its slow going as there is so little oxygen here. However, with patience and determination we arrive at the rim and descend in to the crater for lunch in camp. The afternoon is taken relaxing and acclimatizing. It is a short walk over to the Furtwangler for those that are feeling active! Dinner is taken in the mess tent and then off to bed. Overnight Crater Camp (full board).
DAY 9 – SUMMIT/MILLENIUM
We rise early to try to time out ascent with the rising sun. It takes around 45 minutes to an hour to reach Uhuru peak – our ultimate goal. After sunrise we then head down the mountain down screed slopes and the biggest glacial valley on Kilimanjaro. The train passes back trough Barafu camp where we rest briefly before continuing down to Millennium camp for lunch. In the afternoon we take an easy pace down to Mweka camp, our last camp on Kilimanjaro. Dinner and overnight mweka camp (full board)
DAY 10 – ARUSHA
The final descent takes you through the lower health section that eventually turns in to rainforest. Your time on Kilimanjaro ends at Mweka gate where your vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to you evening’s accommodation. You may now relax take a hot shower or even relax by the pool! Enjoy a wonderful celebration dinner!

The Machame 7 days route is the most beautiful route up the famous Mount Kilimanjaro. The Machame route is best suited to adventurous hikers looking for an authentic and rustic experience, as the route offers tented accommodation only, and all your equipment and supplies are brought up with help from a porter.
The 7 days Machame route , also known as the “Whiskey” route, is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro. Machame’s draw is in its scenic beauty. However, the trail is considered difficult, steep and challenging, particularly due to its shorter itinerary. Therefore this route is better suited for more adventurous folks or those with some high altitude, hiking or backpacking experience,
The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the south, beginning with a short drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. The path leads hikers through the rain forest to Shira Plateau. Here, many of 7 Days Machame Route Climbing Kilimanjaro Trekking & Hikes converge. Then the route turns east and traverses underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route.
DAY O – Arrival – Kilimanjaro
Once you have arrived safely at Kilimanjaro airport you will be met by one of our friendly driver who will transfer you to White House Hotel in Moshi. Should you arrive early you can explore the small town of Moshi, which is only a short taxi ride away, or you can just relax at the lodge and get ready for the days ahead. You will also meet with one of our operations staff and Guide who will explain everything you need to know regarding your trek and check all your equipment.
Days 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
>>> The drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. Days 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak
Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, but short, breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900 ft), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.
From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The trail is very rocky and can be quite hard on the knees; trekking poles are helpful. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Mount Kilimanjaro Climb through Marangu Route is the easiest and most popular route to the summit, the Marangu Route is used by almost 50% of all climbers and uses comfortable mountain huts with solar power light and it is also suitable for those adventure tourists who don’t have much experiences climbing the mountains, therefore classified as a moderate trek rather than a climb. Although the trail can be a little crowded a certain time of the year, the views are beautiful and each day of walking progresses through a different climate zone, adding considerably to the interest of the trekking.
The total time during the mountain climbing will be 5 days on Marangu Route.
The real highlight for those who opt for Marangu Route is the walk from Gillman’s point along the crater rim to the summit of Uhuru, passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that occupy most of the summit area. The views as the sun rises behind Mawenzi Peak on a clear morning are absolutely magnificent –The Rift Valley, Mount Meru and the Maasai Steppes stand out from the endless plains, almost three vertical miles below.
Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Marangu Route
You should know that during your Kilimanjaro expedition through Marangu Route, you will be staying in the alpine huts that are dormitory style sleeping up to 5 trekkers per one hut. It is not possible to have a single occupancy hut. A single traveler will pay a single supplement applicable to the stay in the base hotel only.
Day 1 – Arrive at JRO/ Arusha:
Arrival in Kilimanjaro International Airport, Meet and assist at the airport and after going through Immigration, Baggage Claim and Customs, Transfer to Tulia Boutique Hotel & Spa to overnight at on Bed and Breakfast basis. We will gather in the evening for a pre-climbing briefing and climbing equipment check. We will also confirm that you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance as well.
Day 2 – Mandara Hut
The National Park Gate (1,830 m) lies at the edge of Marangu, which is an attractive village with many small coffee and banana plantations. After completing the entrance formalities, we climb up through attractive and unspoilt forest to reach the clearing containing Mandara Hut (2,700 m.), a group of comfortable ‘A’ frame wooden huts. The largest cabin has a downstairs dining area and an upstairs dormitory and mattresses. Smaller huts sleep eight persons. The total capacity is sixty persons. Water is piped onto site from a spring above and there are flush toilets behind the main cabin. The volcanic remains of Maundi Crater are nearby and make a good afternoon excursion. An alternative is to rest and enjoy the beautiful forest. There is a rich birdlife at the huts and monkeys are often seen as well. It takes about 3–5 hours walk.
Day 3 – Horombo Hut
The first part of the walk is a steep ascent through the forest, but the path soon opens out into grassy moorland and in clear weather, there are good views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. We climb steadily through the moorland zone, containing giant heathers and occasional stands of groundsel, to eventually reach the hut complex at Horombo (3,720 m.). The buildings here are similar to Mandara Hut, but total capacity is one hundred and twenty persons. Water is piped from the stream behind the huts. There are platform toilets south east of the main hut, about eighty metres down the slope and flush toilets have been built within the complex of small huts. Sunrises and sunsets here are often spectacular and the site is close to the glaciated dome of Kibo. There is a real sense of being above the clouds here. It takes about 4–6 hours walk.
Day 4 – Kibo Hut
We climb very gradually towards the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain changes to scree and there is a palpable sense of high altitude wilderness. We usually reach Kibo Hut (4,700 m.) at the bottom of the crater wall by midday. Kibo is a stone-built block house with a small dining area and a number of dormitory rooms leading off a main corridor. There are bunk beds and mattresses for about sixty people. There is no water here so one has to bring an ample supply from the ‘last water’ supply above Horombo Hut. Platform toilets are behind the hut. The remainder of the day is spent resting and eating in preparation for the final climb before a very early night. It takes about 4–5 hours walk.
Day 5 – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut
We will start our ascent by torchlight at about 1:00am, aiming to be up at Gillman’s Point by sunrise. The initial climb is steep over loose volcanic scree, but there are some well-graded zig–zags and a slow but steady pace will have us up to Gillman’s (5,685 m.) in about five or six hours. We will rest there and spend some time taking in the sunrise. For those who are still feeling strong can make the three hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m.), passing close to the spectacular glaciers that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent is surprisingly fast and we return to Horombo for the night. It takes about11–15 hours walk.
Day 6 – Marangu Park Gate – Back to Arusha:
After breakfast, a steady descent takes you down through moorland to Mandara Hut (8,900 ft). We then continue descending through lovely lush forest on a good path to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate at Marangu (6,000 ft) where are transferred to Tulia Boutique Hotel & Spa to overnight on Bed and Breakfast basis.
Day 7 – Departure Transfer (optional) as you can depart on your own:

From Moir you traverse the slopes of Kibo. Here relatively little flora or fauna can survive the extreme temperature ranges and conditions that typify this zone. Lunch is normally taken close to a volcanic rock formation known as the Lava Tower. If you feel very strong there is an optional ascent of the 300-foot-tall Lava Tower before descending down to Barranco camp in the afternoon, passing through the strange yet beautiful ‘Garden of the Senecios’ (giant groundsel) which also features many giant lobelias. You now have a relatively short day to reach Karanga Camp, after conquering the intimidating Barranco Wall. Be prepared to use all four limbs as you traverse the wall to the top of the Karanga Valley. From here, follow a path that sojourns through many inclines and declines to Karanga Camp, arriving in the late afternoon. Our selection of Karanga Camp is strategic – significant time at altitude is essential for safe acclimatization. Sunsets here are particularly spectacular with views of the southern glacial valleys and ice fields towering over 3000 feet above you. Overnight at Karanga Camp.

Here, you are rewarded with the most glorious sunrise you are ever likely to see, appearing over Mawenzi Peak. Ascending via Stella Point affords a relatively short final section to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa! Take as many pictures as you can! After a short celebration at the summit, begin the ebullient trek down. Go slowly and enjoy the wonderful rainforest scenery as you head towards Mweka Camp, arriving before dusk. Join us again for the best Kilimanjaro trekking Marangu route 6 days itinerary.
The Umbwe Route is one of the most secluded ones on Kilimanjaro. It starts at the tropical rainforest and goes in parallel with the Machame Route, joining together at Barranco Camp on 3800 m point.
Hiking Umbwe you will see all the climate zones of Kilimanjaro from the rainforest to the famous glaciers. Umbwe also is the shortest way to Uhuru Peak due to its steepness, however the properly selected camps are always good to adapt well.
Usually travelers do not favor this route because of the physical requirements to summit successfully, and the presence of acclimatization experience is highly recommended to hike Kilimanjaro by the Umbwe Route. However, it is a very interesting route and a real challenge for skilled climbers.
DAY 1: TREKKING FROM UMBWE GATE TO UMBWE CAMP
Change in Elevation:
– Umbwe Gate (1,640 m)
– Umbwe Camp (2,930 m)
A guide and a mountain support crew will arrive at the hotel in the morning in order to meet you and hold a quick briefing, after which you will travel by vehicle to the entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park: Umbwe Gate (1,640 m). After the quick formality of acquiring climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, the group will start trekking up to your first camp: Umbwe Camp (2,930 m). This will be a long trekking day that includes an important increase in altitude, so don’t hurry. It is important to find the right pace for your group and stick with it for the rest of the trip. You should also remember to take your raincoats: this route includes passage through a rainforest, where tropical showers are highly probable.
By the time you reach the camp, our professional mountain crew will prepare everything necessary, put tents and cook dinner for you
DAY 2: TREKKING FROM UMBWE CAMP TO BARRANCO CAMP
Change in Elevation:
– Umbwe Camp (2,930 m)
– Barranco Camp (3,960 m)
Early wakeup, breakfast and the start of trekking to Barranco Camp. The rainforest will quickly give way to brush, and if it is not too cloudy you will be able to see Meru Volcano for the first time. Trekking on the Umbwe Route for this day will be of a moderate length, and around lunchtime you will reach Barranco Camp (3,960 m), which is nestled inside a huge volcanic fault. Lunch will be provided here, and then you have the opportunity to relax for the rest of the day, which significantly facilitates the acclimatization process.
DAY 3: TREKKING FROM BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP
Trekking from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp:
Change in Elevation:
– Barranco Camp (3,960 m)
– Karanga Camp (4,035 m)
Acclimatization hike:
Change in Elevation:
– Karanga Camp (4,035 m)
– Destination point en route to Barafu Camp (4,270 m)
Early wakeup, breakfast and the start of summiting Barranco Wall (we recommend you leave the camp as early as possible to avoid crowds of the other groups). Hiking up the gorge wall is not difficult and only takes around an hour. After the climb you can have a rest and take photos in front of the Kibo volcano.
Then you start a more difficult hike to Karanga Camp, which features numerous ascents and descents during the route, but don’t worry: our guides are experts at choosing an optimal pace for the group. After reaching the camp you will be offered warm lunch. After a couple of hours you will have to complete an acclimatization hike in the direction of Barafu Camp with a 200-meter gain in altitude, and then descent back down to the camp.
Note: The acclimatization hike is an easy trek with a slight gain in altitude done in order to speed up the acclimatization process. You should take the acclimatization hikes very seriously. They help increase your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro and save you from the consequences of altitude sickness.
DAY 4: TREKKING FROM KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP
Trekking from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp:
Change in Elevation:
– Karanga Camp (4,035 m)

After regaining strength, you have to complete an acclimatization hike towards the intermediate Kosovo Summit Camp (4,800 m) and then back to Barafu Camp, where you will be served a hot dinner. It is better to spend the remainder of the day resting and sleeping before night summiting
DAY 5: ASCENT TO UHURU PEAK AND DESCENT TO MILLENNIUM CAMP

– Millennium Camp (3,820 m)
Departure from Barafu Camp (4,640 m) at night and the start of summiting Kilimanjaro: Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Technically the climb is relatively simple; however, the most challenging part is the high altitude. Each pair of climbers will get a personal guide for the entire ascent to monitor your physical and mental conditions. After your successful ascent to Uhuru Peak, you can descend to the nearest glacier if desired. Then you will return to Barafu Camp and after a 2-hour rest continue your descent to Millennium Camp (3,820 m).
Note: Don’t forget that 90% of all accidents occur during the descent, including all broken arms and legs. Please pay attention to your feet, as there is a high risk of damaging your toenails.
DAY 6: DESCENT FROM MILLENNIUM CAMP TO MWEKA GATE
Change in Elevation:
– Millennium Camp (3,820 m)
– Mweka Gate (1,650 m)
The camp is situated in a tropical rainforest. When you wake up, you will feel relief from the reduction of the height and the satisfaction of reaching the summit. After a warm breakfast, you will head for the park’s exit: Mweka Gate (1,650 m). After your descent the whole group will gather to congratulate you, followed by offering you a chance to share your opinions on the climb in the guestbook.
